Religious Education
The PSR Program developed in three stages. In the first stage, classes met in Parish homes. Having more than one child in the Program often caused a parent to have to drive all over the county in one evening, but parents made the sacrifice for their children’s religious education. In the second stage, classes met at Harrison Street Elementary School until the first Parish Church and Social Hall was built in 1983. In the third stage, parish classes met in the Lower Social Hall of the Church and the Parish Rectory until 2005. Today, classes meet in the Upper and Lower Social Hall in what was the first parish church and Big Walnut Elementary School - 940 S. Old 3-C Highway, Sunbury, OH (740) 965-3902. The St John Neumann PSR Program has always had a rich tradition of parent involvement and loving sacrifice. For thirteen years parents not only taught but also coordinated the PSR program. The first Director of Religious Education (“DRE”) hired by St John Neumann Parish was Mrs. Carole White in 1990. Today St John Neumann PSR teachers prepare for their teaching positions only after filling out a volunteer application, participating in a Protecting God's Children Workshop and receiving an acceptable BCII/FBI report. During the 2010/2011 school year St. John Neumann Parish PSR will take place on Sundays and Wednesdays from mid-September to early May.
The PSR tuition is $110.00 per child per year and families need to be registered in the parish. Registrations can take up to two weeks to process. The Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist are received in the second grade. The Sacrament of Confirmation is received in the eighth grade. Our DRE is Robert Steinbauer. He is available to answer questions on Sundays from 8 A.M.-12:00 P.M. in the Lower Parish Social Hall. He also is available on Wednesdays from 5-9 P.M. His phone number is (740) 965-1358 x 9. Our Religious Education Assistant, Jackie Sutton, can also answer your questions via email to or at (740) 965-1358 x 23. To register your child for the PSR program please read the parent letter and schedule, then print the registration form. |
