We are excited to begin a new Family Catechesis program here at St. John Neumann this fall! Recognizing that God never goes back and always moves forward in promising us a hope and a future, this new model for PSR will better allow our parish and families to work together by focusing on supporting, enriching and encouraging parents in order to strengthen parent/child engagement in the Faith. This increases the likelihood that a child will receive an authentic education in the Faith and develop into a knowledgeable and practicing Catholic.
This new program, titled A Family of Faith, is designed to help develop strong Catholic families in which children learn the joys of following Jesus Christ and the truths of our Faith through the witness of Christian life given by their parents.
Countless studies tell us that parental involvement in the faith-life of a child is by far the most important element in ensuring that a child develops into a practicing Christian. A Family of Faith will enable both the parish and our elementary school families (grades 1-5) to walk together with a deeper awareness of our mission as Catholic families, engage the whole family, and help parents lead their children to heaven.
What will this look like at St. John Neumann?
This new program will replace our traditional Parish School of Religion (PSR) program on Tuesday evenings. Families registered for A Family of Faith will gather as a family at SJN on the first and fourth Tuesday of the month from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Our time together on the first Tuesday will include daily Mass, followed by a brief teaching. On the fourth Tuesday, we will enjoy community activities designed for the whole family, as well as time for discussion in groups of families. While the entire family is welcome to attend, we at least need one parent (or grandparent, godparent, or other adult faith mentor) to attend with the children in your family on these two Tuesdays.
Materials and guidance will be provided for activities and discussions that you can do on your own schedule throughout the rest of the month. These activities are adaptable based on the age of the children participating and are meant to fit into your daily lives.
A Family of Faith will be geared towards children in grades 1-5. Preschool and Kindergarten PSR will still meet on Sunday mornings during the 9am Mass, as usual, but children in this age group are also welcome to attend the A Family of Faith program with their older siblings if parents would like.
A Family of Faith will help you by:
- Providing flexibility by not having weekly meetings while still maintaining support from and community with the parish
- Empowering you to transform the family activities that you already do into encounters with God.
- Maximizing your influence as parents over your child’s belief and practice of the faith by supporting you with continued growth in the faith
- Prioritizing the spiritual habits that you would like to establish as a family
- Providing community teaching, social activities, service opportunities for your family and materials and best practices for growing as a Family of Faith
